Artist Statement

I am not a painter – I am a drawer that paints. My work does not start out as a grand idea but a small burst of inspiration; from a word, a melody, a snippet of something made from someone else. The referential becomes the personal. A collage of thought comes out of me as an attempt to investigate what it means to be me. Which is also what it means to be you. My work is centered in this investigation of human, familial relationships, personal talismans, identity (singular and collective), favorite colors and so on. 

The work does not take itself seriously – but you should. I use comedy to soften the blow of the serious message/feeling/thought, like the chuckle you let out when your day goes from bad to worse. I work in code using symbols, characters, and text that require a specific collection of knowledge to understand. You are not in on the joke but still you are invited to laugh.
